59, single, 14 rixthalers, (found in Greisheim, northwest of Strasbourg, France)
32, wife age 34, and 4 rixthalers. Left 5 children, ages nine months to 10 years but are hoping that they will follow. (Found in Osthoven, west of Strasbourg, France.)
Both these sighting are documented in the article, Swiss Taufers in France, Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage, July, 1980, pages 24 and 25. The article states:
"The Mennonite archives at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands houses a number of old documents relating to the Swiss Taufers who were banished from their homeland. Generally the whole family would leave Switzerland for Germany or France...
In January of 1672 George Liechten and Valenti Hutwol, while traveling in the mountainous area west of Strasbourg, France, visited four communities of Anabaptists in Greisheim, Fessenheim, Wolfsheim, and Osthoven. These Swiss families had evidently lived for a short time between the small villages of Bremen and Bingen in the Black Forest region of Germany prior to emigrating to France.
The following list cites the names of the families Liechten and Hutwol visited in these communities. It also gives their ages, number of children, and a listing of the meager possessions they carried with them to France - Lois Ann Zook"
Both these sightings are from the book, Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, no date. This book lists immigrants immigration to America and its sources. Unfortunately we don't have the source right now and can only supply limited information. The exact listing in the Passenger and Immigration Lists Index is:
Lichty, Johan Jacob n.a.; Lancaster, Pa, 1719 7820 p438
Lichty, Johannes n.a.; Lancaster, Pa., 1719 7820 p437
The Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage Magazine, no date, has a footnote in an article on page 20. (Sorry, no article name either, my apologies to the author and magazine). The footnote states:
"Henry Lichty was the son of Jost Lichty, who settled in 1720 on 190 acres on the west side of the Conestoga Creek at Lancaster. Jost Lichty died, and his widow married Peter Leman, the younger, whose will in 1744 mentions his stepson, Henry Lichty. Henry Lichty or Light died in 1813. His will, written in 1803, mentions no daughters, and only two sons, John and Henry. The will was probated in 1813 and is recorded in Book K-1-422, Lancaster County Courthouse, Lancaster, Pa."
This sighting is part of a footnote on page 309 of the book Immigrants from Zweibruecken to the American Colonies. (No date or author available). The footnote states:
"Ludwig Born, a tailor, was born in 1702 at Rimachweiler, in Zweibruecken. He and his wife Anna Maria, settled at the Swatara in the present Lebanon county. He was an elder of the Swatara Reformed congregation. On February 12, 1745, Jacob Lichty and Christian Rauch preached in the Swatara church, and went 'o Ludwig Born, a Reformed elder of this congregation, to stay over night with him.' ..."
The book, Pennsylvania German Pioneers, no date, lists a Jacob Lichty on an arriving passenger list. We believe the Jacob Lichty of our genealogy arrived in 1765 and include this arrival as an unknown sighting. The book states:
"[List 159 C] At the Courthouse at Philadelphia, Saturday, the 3d of November, 1750.
Present: The Worshipful William Plumsted, Esquire, Mayor.
Mr. David Martin, Rector of the Academy.
The Foreigners whose Names are subscribed, imported in the Ship Brotherhood, Captain John Thomson, from Rotterdam & last from Cowes, did this day take & and subscribe the usual Qualification. By List 119. Persons 300."
This is found in a book review from the Mennonite Research Journal, page 17, no date (possible 1964-65). The book review is of the book History of Lichty's Church and Cemetery, by George G. Sauder, 1964, 93 pp., $2.00. The book review describes the history of the Lichty congregation in Caernarvon-East Earl Townships. Many persons are discussed, starting in 1723. Unfortunately, the only specific Lichty mentioned is "Jacob Light (Lichty)" and no date is given. If anybody know about this book please contact Donald Lichty through this site's Homepage.
