The Lichty family was of Swiss origin, coming fom a small village north of Bern. The name Lichty, meaning "light" in German, indicated that they were the people who lived in the clearing or lighter area in the forest. The family came to US in 1765 from Switzerland. He settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania before moving to Somerset Co., PA. He was in York County at the time of John's birth.

(1) Peter A., son
With his family Abraham came to America from Switzerland in 1767. "They landed in
Philadelphia and located in Lancaster county, Pa. [or near Baltimore, MD?] In 1785
[Peter?] went to Somerset county, then a part of Bedford county, Penna. and had a land
warrant surveyed for 500 acres in Elk Lick township and reaching to the Maryland line on
the south. A draft of this tract of land can be found in the survey book in the Somerset
Countycourt house. The tract was called "Bargeldt". Abraham in 1795, just two
years after his father located in Somerset county, bought the Jacob Markley farm, adjacent
to the present village of West Salisbury."
Ada & Evan Maust, May 28, 1995: Say he came from Carroll Co, MD
"PA Historic Resource Survey Form": Located along Rt 669, 1/4 mile S. of West
Salisbury. "The Beachy house is noteworthy for its stone construction and its
integrity of design. The dwelling, dated 1809, is one of the few early stone structures in
Somerset Co, an area not well known for its building stone.
The first occupant of
the West Salisbury house was Abraham Beachy, a miller, cooper, papermaker, tanner,
shoemaker, and farmer. He was an immigrant from Switzerland.
The stone portion of the house, built of uncoursed sandstone rubble and cut sandstone
quoins, is a banked structure consisting of 3 rooms on each level and an interior chimney.
The chimney serves a large kitchen fireplace. A date stone bearing the year 1809 and the
builder's name, I.J. Fuller, is high in the gable end of the house.
The house was built along the Casselman River near the crossing of the Turkeyfoot Trail.
Near the home Beachy and his son Peter built a tub mill on what is now known as Tub MIll
Run. The mill processed feed and flour for a large area and also produced paper. Cooper
says Frederick Charles Goeb, early printer, bought paper here."
He took out a patent for a tract of land covering 1000 acres, keeping several hundred
acres. Amish. Both Barbara and Abrahham are buried in the Beachy Cemetery, north of old
road leading form West Salisbury to Springs, Elklick twp., Somerset Co., PA

Douglas was a farmer in Somerset Co., PA; "in 1854 Douglas Boyd purchased the John Lichty farm consisting of 296 acres of land." In 1854 Douglas built a home on the farm of spruce logs 34 feet long and hewed out 10 inches thick and two feet wide. The house is approximently 22 feet wide. The cellar contained a huge fireplace where the cooking and canning was done. The stone foundation was of huge rocks found on the place. In 1911 Harden May added to the house, making it 50 feet long. There is a kitchen on the main floor today and two rooms on the other side of a central stairs. Upstairs there are 5 bedrooms. In 1977 there was a chimney on the north side of the house. A fire in 1968 destroyed the old chimney. An outside door and porch are on the west. New siding has been added along the way. The 34 foot long barn was destroyed in 1974 by a snow storm. In 1862 the family was forced to draw up papers to have Douglas declared unfit to conduct his own business. Susanna came to Iowa in 1865 and purchased the Israel D. Gager farm north of Liscomb. They moved to Iowa in 1866.
